Submitting a sitemap to the search engines is one way of increasing the website crawl rate i.e. the search engines will find your content much faster. You are not required to submit your sitemap because the search engine will eventually find your blog and index it. But like I mentioned before, it helps to generate a sitemap and manually submit it. For example, if your blog is hosted on blogger, you do not have to create a sitemap, you simply just access it by going to its feed at any of these two links:
http://gwisewisenheimer.blogspot.com/atom.xml
http://gwisewisenheimer.blogspot.com/rss.xml
To get your blog indexed in the search engine, you simply have to submit its feed. The actual sitemap of a blog hosted on blogger is found at this link http://gwisewisenheimer.blogspot.com/sitemap.xml and it contains information about the posts published and the dates each post was last modified.
